UBL 2.1
In short: UBL 2.1 (Universal Business Language) is the XML vocabulary UAE e-invoices are written in — the OASIS-standardised syntax underneath PINT AE. UBL defines the elements a business document can contain; PINT AE defines which of them the UAE requires and how they must be filled.
UBL has been the backbone of e-invoicing mandates worldwide for a decade, which is precisely why the UAE adopted it: tooling, libraries and expertise already exist. A UAE e-invoice is therefore three layers — UBL syntax, the Peppol PINT model constraining it, and the AE profile localising it.
Implementers rarely hand-write UBL; the work is mapping ERP data into it correctly and surviving validation. When a document fails, the error speaks UBL — element names and paths — which is why integration teams need someone who reads it. Related: PINT AE · Peppol and the 5-corner model.
